Letter from John Johnston in Piqua, Ohio, to his son-in-law, Jefferson Patterson, of Dayton reports on his writing contributions for Henry Howe's book, Historical Collections of Ohio. Johnston comments on his health and family news and asks Patterson's assistance in having sketches done of Dayton and Piqua localities, to be included in Howe's book.

Johnston was born in Ireland. He emigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia in 1786. In 1802 he was appointed Indian factor in Fort Wayne, Ind. and apparently took over the position of Indian agent there in 1809. Charles Campbell (1807-1876) was born on 1 May 1807, in Petersburg, Virginia, the firstborn child of parents John Wilson Campbell (d.1842), and Mildred Walker Moore Campbell. John, a bookstore owner, was also a historian. In 1831 he published the History of Virginia to 1781 . Later, he held the position of Federal Collector of Customs in Petersburg, Virginia.
